News Consumption & Social Media

It is undeniable that digital news consumption has been growing rapidly since news has become available online. Lets look at some infographics that illustrate this point as well as just how online news distribution has morphed in that time.

Main Sources For News-Internet vs. T.V. vs. Newspapers vs. Radio

This chart from PEW research center in 2013 shows the exponential growth of the internet as the main source of news for adults. It also illustrates the decline of television and newspapers as main sources for news. Although radio shows some growth, most likely due to the advent of podcasts, the volume pales in comparison to the internet. This chart simply provides a visual representation of what is practically obvious common knowledge to most consumers. Another interesting angle to view news source is within the sub categories of news via the internet.

News From The Internet Via Social Media

This chart illustrates the percentage of U.S. adults that use various social media websites as pathways to consume news. Unsurprisingly, Facebook holds the lion’s share. At this point, many argue that Facebook has transcended being a social media platform to being a news outlet.

Why Social Media For News?

This chart illustrates what consumers like about obtaining news from social media websites. The number one advantage reported is convenience. This dwarfs the next closest motivations by more than double. The idea of convenience being a strong motivator for news consumption through social media has interesting implications.

News media is a powerful influencer of individual and public opinion and has been since its inception. The idea that news is being accessed through social media mainly as a result of convenience begs the question of how can news consumption become more convenient. Can it be embedded in other software and applications that have become part of our every day routines? Will we start seeing them in fitness apps? Perhaps news will find its way into dating websites and free hookup apps. Online dating is growing and is an interesting niche to consider.

Of course Facebook has made a lot of its own news recently, but everyday there are other social media platforms that users are looking to as pathways to news. The next question is the same age old challenge of news since its inception; how can news be kept objective and valuable rather than malicious, controlling, and exploitative.

How Has The Way People Get Their News Changed?

Initially, when the world first came about, nobody knew anything about the population or anything that was going on other than about the ones living with them. But knowing about what happens all around the universe in all the directions of north, south, east, and west, NEWS was invented. NEWS is an abbreviation for all the directions that is, North, East, West, and South. It is defined as a platform that provides all the information about the current (in other words present) happenings around the world. It is very helpful to know because based on the current happenings, future can be developed and preserved in a much better way.

Importance of News

As we can see every day there are a lot of innovations in almost all the fields. Landlines have been replaced by mobile phones, we have machines that wash your clothes and automatically tells you that the work is done and switches itself off. We have technology where one device has complete control of your homes and offices. You can literally track whatever is going on in your house from a faraway place. That is how easy it has become for us to know about everything that is going on around us. How are we able to know about all of this? This is because of NEWS. News from all the places of the world are gathered and reached out to all the places of the world. News is not just about telling what is going on around you but also lets you know the opportunities for business, job, lands available for sale and what not. Through this you can get your jobs, earn money, it helps you to find new places and explore everywhere, meet new people and much more.

Historical ways for news to travel

There are several ways to know what is happening around us. The earliest way the news was spreading was by the “word of mouth”. People in the ancient times, gathered together in one place and discuss various happenings around them and shared their views about everything around a camp fire. In the earliest era, people from different places communicated using pigeons, and horses. This was done by writing down the message they want to send in a paper, tie it on the pigeon’s claws and send it. But this was only to the group of people whom we want to send. During the dynasty times, communication between different states and countries were happening by writing a letter and assigning a messenger to travel to the destination place where they want the message to convey and to just give the letter to them and again take back their response and give it to their emperor and so on. This method was efficient only for intercommunication and not for global-wide news communication. This cannot reach a large scale of people say, for an entire continent.

Evolution of Newspapers

Which is why newspapers were invented. During the 1665 was the invention of the first newspaper from England. The second was in the year 1705 in Britain and then the newspaper started spreading all around the world. Now newspapers are the way we get to know what is going on world-wide.

Evolution of Internet

As several years passed, there was an evolution of the internet. The internet was utilized in almost all the fields and continues even now and so did it use the advantage of NEWS in internet as well. In the present world we see digital newspapers that has been so helpful to the people around. It is available for free, it is reliable, and it is eco-friendly. We even have a facility of receiving news updates through emails every day. Technology has made everything so simpler for us. People started using telegrams which was the way to write a letter and post it into the post office who will later take it and send to destination.

Digital News and Social Media

Nowadays we are in the technology where the Alexa or Siri has made it so comfortable for you that it could read out the news for you without you looking into it. There are many search engines that explain about everything you need to know. Examples are Google, Mozilla Firefox, internet explorer, etc.

NEWS is gathered from the media. By media, I mean journalists, reporters and of course social media sites like twitter, Facebook, Whatsapp, and Instagram. We even have the facility to look at what is happening in different places on “live”. By this we mean that we can see what is happening in different places at that present period of time. The opportunities for people have been broadened for the people today and even for the future.

All of this evolved by the inventions in the field of science and technology by first focusing on the drawbacks of the present to develop the future.
